Giggs will achieve FA victory without me - Rooney

Manchester United hero Ryan Giggs will lead the side to victory against Manchester City tomorrow, even without Wayne Rooney, according to the star striker.

"You see Giggs winning games for us at his age," Rooney said.

"It shows why he is such a big idol for us all in the dressing room, especially the younger players, who can see how he handles himself.”

Giggs has made over 600 appearances for Manchester United, giving him the record for featuring in the most United games.

"We all hope that when we come to the end of our careers we can have nearly as much success as him," Rooney said.

Rooney will sit out the Manchester City game tomorrow in the second half of his two game ban for swearing at a TV camera in the Wes Ham match. And the on form striker firmly believes that watching the high pressure game will be more difficult than being on the pitch.

"As most footballers will tell you, it's probably more nerve-racking watching a game than it is playing in it," he said.

"It's always disappointing when you don't play in games, especially such a big one as it is on Saturday.

"But I believe we have got a good chance of winning and I am hoping the boys can pull through and get us to the final."

Rooney’s goal against City the last time the two met was one of the greatest of the season, which brought United back to the winning seat with a 2-1 victory.

And Rooney loves to reminisce with fellow team mates Wes Brown and Michael Carrick over the quality and spontaneity of the super goal.

“I just remember Nani’s cross taking a deflection and the ball coming over and just hitting it,” Rooney said.

“You’re always working on your technique, but goals like that are just instinctive.

“When I was in the air, I remember Berba[tov] shouting towards me as if to say ‘what are you doing?!’ Then I turned round and it was in the top corner.”

Carrick mused, “he was just gutted because Rooney’d taken Goal of the Season off him!”

Brown was on the bench for the goal, but the excitement was just as crazy on the sideline.

“I completely lost the plot in the dug-out,” Brown said.

“I was jumping on Chicha[rito] and then I started grabbing Strudders [Tony Strudwick]! For that two or three seconds after you’re just lost in the moment.”
