Ryan Giggs seeks to help Memphis Depay

Louis van Gaal has warned Memphis he must not make the same mistakes Angel di Maria did at Manchester United.

Memphis was dropped to the substitutes' bench for United's impressive 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday and the £25m forward has struggled for form since his summer transfer.

United assistant manager Ryan Giggs is understood to have given Memphis a pep talk about his attitude, though Van Gaal 'did not want to discuss' reports about the 21-year-old's behaviour.

Di Maria was sold after a chastening season in which Van Gaal suggested he had failed to adapt to his 'philosophy' and the United manager has issued a stern warning to Memphis.

“Some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy,” Van Gaal told the Sunday newspapers. “That you cannot know in advance. You have to see that.

“Because you see a lot of qualities in a player, but he has to put that quality in service of your team.

“That also happened with Ángel di María and [Radamel] Falcao – both great players but you have to fit in with the philosophy. Not only with Memphis, with every player that we have bought.”
