Giggs: I'll keep going

  • Tag: Awards
  • Ryan Giggs ready to go for gold

RYAN GIGGS hopes to break his major tournament duck at this summer’s Olympics.

Former Wales star Giggs is yet to feature at an international finals but is on Team GB’s shortlist for London 2012.

He said: “I’m on the shortlist and if I get picked it would be fantastic, I think everyone is excited about the Olympics coming to London and coming to Britain but obviously I’d have to wait and see if I get picked or not.

“It is obviously a tournament and I have never been involved in any.

Giggs: Scholes belongs in England's Euro squad

Ryan Giggs has claimed Paul Scholes is playing the best football of his career and would still light up Euro 2012.

Scholes, 37, has signed up for another year and his performances for Manchester United have sparked talk of a shock return for England.

Boss Roy Hodgson names his squad on Wednesday, but it’s believed Scholes won’t be in it.

Why Alex Ferguson's retirement could see one United legend hand over to another

It was end of term at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground on Monday, and one topic of conversation dominated.

As the players prepared to fly to Belfast for Tuesday night’s testimonial for Harry Gregg, all the talk was of the succession to Sir Alex Ferguson.

There was no suggestion that Ferguson will not be manager next season but there is more and more chatter at the club that the 2012-2013 campaign might be his last.

Giggs backs Gary Neville’s appointment to the England coaching staff

Neville won every major club honour as a player and has impressed as a Sky Sports pundit over the past year, but will take on a new challenge with England this summer at the European Championships 2012 as the surprise inclusion in Roy Hodgson’s new coaching team.

Giggs particularly highlighted Neville’s appreciation for how the modern footballer thinks.

“He’s got fresh ideas,” Giggs said. “He’s just come out of playing football himself, played at the top level, going to international tournaments.

Man Utd dominate 20 Seasons Fantasy Teams

Manchester United players dominate the Fantasy Teams as voted for by both the public and experts as part of the Premier League's 20 Seasons Awards.

The public team was decided by 300,000 football fans from around the world, while the panel team was decided by 11 football experts, commentators and administrators to celebrate two decades of the world's most watched and supported football league.

Prizes for Giggs and Sir Alex

Ryan Giggs has been voted the greatest player of the Premier League era with Sir Alex Ferguson scooping the best manager prize.

The Welshman made his United debut before the inception of the new league in 1992 and has been an ever-present in the top division, scoring in every season and winning 12 titles.

"It's a fantastic double. This is testament to what the club has achieved over the last 20 years."
    - David Gill

Ryan Giggs - Let's win title back

Ryan Giggs is proud to have been named the greatest Premier League player of the past 20 seasons but is already looking to the future and believes Manchester United will come back stronger in their bid to reclaim the title.

Giggs received the special accolade at an awards ceremony in London which also honoured Sir Alex Ferguson as the top manager of the Premier League era.

Ferguson and Giggs have helped United to 12 Premier League titles but this season they agonisingly missed out to local rivals Manchester City after an extraordinary final day.

    Sir Alex & Giggs honoured

Sir Alex Ferguson and Ryan Giggs were honoured at the Premier League's 20 seasons awards ceremony.

Manchester United boss Ferguson was named the best manager of the last 20 seasons after guiding the Old Trafford club to 12 Premier League titles.

20 Seasons Awards honours Shearer, James & Giggs

Premier League legends Alan Shearer, David James and Ryan Giggs have all received special honours in the 20 Seasons Awards.

At a ceremony in London on Tuesday to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Premier League, prizes were given out for top goalscorer, record clean sheet holder and top appearance-maker.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Shearer leads the goal charts with 260, ex-Manchester City and Portsmouth keeper James has 173 clean sheets and Giggs is out in front on 598 appearances for Manchester United.

Ryan Giggs named Best Player in 20 Seasons Awards

Ryan Giggs received his Award from PL chief executive Richard Scudamore

Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has been named Best Player in the Premier League's 20 Seasons Awards.

The 38-year-old was chosen by a panel of football experts and received his prize at a special ceremony to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Premier League in London on Tuesday.

Giggs, who is the only man to have played and scored in all 20 Premier League seasons, beat off competition from nine other nominees to win the award.

Scholes join Giggs to staying on for next season

Sir Alex has confirmed that Paul Scholes will stay at Manchester United for the 2012/2013 campaign.

The midfielder retired last year but returned in January to help fuel the Reds' title bid, playing a key role in the team accruing 89 points and only missing out on the championship on goal difference.

At 37, he still showed a thirst for finding the back of the net - scoring four times, against Bolton, Norwich, QPR and Swansea and all worries that he may call it quits again have been ended by the manager.

    Sir Alex ready to respond

Sir Alex Ferguson is still smarting from Sunday's agonising title defeat to Manchester City but has warned that United will respond next season.

In a passionate declaration of intent, the manager told MUTV that the Reds will continue investing in young players who will continue to form the character of the club. The manner in which United lost the crown to neighbours City may hurt but he retains faith in old heads like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and will be adding to the squad this summer.

Team GB can only have Ryan Giggs

Ryan Giggs is understood to be the only over-aged player who Manchester United will allow to be selected for the Great Britain Olympic team after the club telephoned the Football Association.

United have ruled out Team GB coach Stuart Pearce picking Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Jonny Evans for the Olympic tournament at London 2012 as over-23 players.

Fabien Barthez interviews Giggs and Scholes

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez sat down with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes ahead of the derby at Manchester City.

Fabien Barthez: You started your careers 20 years ago, here in Manchester. What does Manchester mean to you and how were you able to stay at the same club for 20 years, because it is extremely rare?

Lampard wants to emulate Scholes, Giggs

Frank Lampard insists that he wants to remain at Chelsea for a number of years, following the examples of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

The 33-year-old has one-year left on his current deal at Stamford Bridge, and he has been linked with moves to Spain, USA and China.

But Lampard has seen the likes of Scholes and Giggs playing well into their 30s and he wants to do the same.

"I love Chelsea and, ideally, I will be here longer than just one more season," he told the Sunday Mirror.

    Giggs: We're ready to deliver

Ryan Giggs admits the Reds are “frustrated” at having let their advantage over Manchester City slip, but are determined to ensure they leave the Etihad on Monday night with the title still very much in their grasp.

    Giggs Focused On City Clash

Ryan Giggs may have seen it all before in terms of derbies and title races but he admits there is added spice in Monday's blockbuster clash at Manchester City.

The veteran midfielder is hoping to be involved at the Etihad Stadium as Sir Alex is likely to ponder a recall for one of his most trusted professionals in the heat of battle. Certainly, the 38-year-old is one player who will not be feeling any nerves in the tense build-up, after all he was credited with the winner in a derby as long ago as 1991 - even if it did appear to be an own goal by Colin Hendry.

Giggs & Vidic set to miss Vadim Evseev's Testimonial

Manchester United players Ryan Giggs and Nemanja Vidic are likely to refuse their invitiations to a testimonial match for ex-Russia defender Vadim Evseev next month, a spokesperson for the club told RIA-Novosti on Friday.

Evseev announced Wednesday that he had invited both players to attend on May 14, with Giggs possibly playing and the injured Vidic watching from the stands.

Glenn Roeder: Giggs the best in Premier League

    Rosicky inspired by United veterans

Tomas Rosicky feels there is plenty more to come from him next season as the veteran Czech midfielder looks to make up for lost time at Arsenal.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a relative injury free-spell and in March agreed a contract extension, which coincided with his best form of the year.

Since signing from Borussia Dortmund in May 2006, a string of frustrating fitness issues hampered Rosicky's progress, and the former Sparta Prague man missed the entire 2008/09 season because of a hamstring tendon problem.

Nicky Butt: City rock but United rule

Nicky Butt pitted himself against some of the cream of world football’s midfield players for United.

Juventus’s Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps and Edgar Davids, Rivaldo and Luis Figo for Barcelona, Stefan Effenberg and Lothar Matthaus for Bayern Munich.

He also clashed with the same world-class quality for England on the European and World Cup stage.

Gorton-born Butt, however, describes City’s current midfield department as ‘frightening.’

Giggs & Vidic Expected at Vadim Evseev's Testimonial

English Premier League stars Ryan Giggs, Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic are expected to join ex-Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o at a testimonial game for Russia defender Vadim Evseev next month, Evseev said Wednesday.

Evseev, 35, retired in December after a career spanning 16 years, including six seasons at Lokomotiv Moscow, whose ground will host the match between Russia and a Rest of the World side on May 14.

Sir Alex fury at Olympic selection

Manchester United's manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reacted with incredulity to having a dozen players – including Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs – put on standby for the Olympic Games tournament that clashes with British clubs' pre-season preparations. He has predicted "absolute chaos" and called it "ridiculous" that so many players from leading clubs could be involved in a competition that does not finish until the day before the Community Shield, on the weekend before the Premier League begins.

Sir Alex's advice for Ashley Young

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he's "had a word" with Ashley Young about going down too easily inside the penalty area, although maintains referee Mark Halsey was right to award United an early penalty against Aston Villa last weekend.

When Young went to ground under a challenge from Villa defender Ciaran Clark, Halsey had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Villa players were incensed by the decision and argued the Reds winger had made the most out of minimal contact. It's been a hot topic for debate in newspapers and on television ever since.

20 Seasons Awards: Gary Neville on Ryan Giggs

Gary Neville came through the ranks at Manchester United with Ryan Giggs, a Premier League legend and one of the men on the shortlist for Best Player in the 20 Seasons Awards.

Neville spent his entire career at Old Trafford before retiring at the end of the 2010/11 season and was in the same Premier League-winning team as Giggs eight times, with the indefatigable Welshman having another four in his trophy cabinet.

Rio: Giggs & Scholes inspired me

Rio Fedinand claims golden oldies Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have inspired him to try to continue his Manchester United career for as long as he can.

He will pack up prematurely only if his body fails him.

The United defender, 33, is four years younger than Scholes — who came out of retirement earlier this season — and five years younger than Giggs.

Ferdinand, preparing to face Aston Villa today, said: “They are an inspiration to people like me.

    Giggs Answer The Fans

Ryan Giggs responded to questions from the Red Army in the latest issue of United Review...

Which opposition player has stood out for you this season? (Max Singer)
Robin van Persie. In a team that hasn't always been performing to its maximum, he's been brilliant. He's produced so many goals, and important ones as well. You really have to hand it to him.

How does it feel when some of the referees are younger than you? (Ellen Graham)

    Ryan Giggs demands response

Ryan Giggs made no excuses for Manchester United's shock defeat by Wigan and has urged his team-mates to quickly respond to their Premier League title race wobble.

A 1-0 loss at the DW Stadium cut the defending champions' lead over Manchester City, who won comprehensively against West Brom, to five points with five games left to play.

Sir Alex Ferguson described the defeat as 'awful' and United were not at their best against Wigan as they went down to Shaun Maloney's second-half goal.

    Giggs urges Reds to respond

Ryan Giggs has called on United to bounce back from the disappointing 1-0 defeat at Wigan.

The midfielder felt the Reds were denied a clear penalty when Maynor Figueroa handled a Phil Jones cross in the box but had few complaints about the scoreline after a below-par display. The onus is on the league leaders to start building another crucial unbeaten run, starting with the weekend clash against Aston Villa.

    Giggs - No let up

Ryan Giggs has vowed Manchester United will not ease up despite opening up an eight-point gap over Manchester City in the title race.

The 19-times champions have surged to the summit on the back of an eight-game winning streak, while City have faltered with just one victory in their last five.

With just six games of the season remaining, it appears unthinkable that Sir Alex Ferguson's side will not be able to defend their Premier League crown once again.

Ryan Giggs: 13th title would be my best

Ryan Giggs has one hand on a 13th title medal — and believes this could be the sweetest of the lot.

The Welshman reckons it will be a massive achievement if Manchester United can end a challenging season by retaining their crown.

Giggs, 38, admits the champions have been hit hard by injuries to the likes of Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher for large parts of the season.

They also waved goodbye to a wealth of experience in the summer — even though Paul Scholes was then lured out of retirement a few months later.

Ryan Giggs aiming to retain crown

Ryan Giggs feels Manchester United's Premier League campaign will deserve special praise if they manage to wrap up a record 20th title.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men now have an eight-point advantage at the top with only six games of the season remaining.

And the Red Devils are on course to potentially win the league at the Etihad Stadium against arch-rivals Manchester City on April 30th following their neighbours' title challenge collapse in recent weeks.

Ryan Giggs: Title win would be huge

Been there, done that. Twelve times over. Record appearance-maker Ryan Giggs is enjoying being part of yet another title run-in...

The most decorated man in English football certainly knows a thing or two about winning Premier League titles.

Wales stars can play in Olympics

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey will play for Team GB in the London Olympics - and with the blessing of the FA of Wales.

Four Wales stars are set to go for gold this summer, with Swansea left-back Neil Taylor also being selected alongside Spurs' Bale and Arsenal's Ramsey and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs under close scrutiny as one of the three over-23 players in the Team GB Olympic squad.

Ryan Giggs on facing Mark Hughes

Manchester United legend Mark Hughes will set a stern test for the Reds this weekend, according to his former team-mate Ryan Giggs.

Queens Park Rangers will be the fourth club to come to Old Trafford under Sparky's stewardship, after previous visits with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Fulham. So while facing United away may be a new experience for some of the QPR players, Giggs warns their gaffer has gained enough knowledge to represent a threat to the Reds.

    Giggs Ready For Rovers

Ryan Giggs believes Blackburn Rovers will be fired up for Monday night's showdown at Ewood Park.

The Reds will be backed by a sizeable and vocal travelling army of fans but the extra ticket allocation seems to have helped inspire the home supporters in return in the past. United have won only two times in the last 11 league visits to the Lancashire ground, although the point secured last season clinched the 19th title.

United's experience key to run-in battle

The 1st installment in James Horncastle's month long series documenting the Battle for Manchester.

The flecks of grey in Ryan Giggs’s hair and stubble offer a reminder that time waits for no man, not even a player known for much of his career as a boy wonder. A month on from his 900th appearance for Manchester United, the temptation is to say Giggs has seen it all.

Who better then to give an indication of where and when the title race with Manchester City will be won?

Giggs vs Maldini - football's greatest ever one-club stars

The Manchester United midfielder broke the former AC Milan man's appearance record on Monday night as he played his 903rd match for the Red Devils.

With football becoming driven by money more and more each year, the habit of breeding your own players appears to be one that is becoming less important, particularly for the bigger clubs as they look to gain immediate success. But there are two players that epitomise just what can be brought through the ranks.

Giggs labels fellow one-club star Maldini a ‘legend’

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs has labelled former AC Milan and Italy defender Paolo Maldini a "legend" and hailed the way in which the Italian defied critics to succeed for 25 years.

The Welshman broke Maldini’s appearance record for playing at a single European club when he made his 903rd appearance for the Red Devils against Fulham, but the 38-year-old has been quick to praise the impact that the Italian defender had on football.

Ryan Giggs: Yoga is key to prolonging my Manchester United career

Ryan Giggs has said that practising yoga has kept him in the game for so long and added that he would still love to play another 100 games for Manchester United. The Welshman, who is chasing his 13th Premier League title, told Gazzetta dello Sport that he has had to change the way he thinks on the pitch but that he is still "living the dream".

"The yoga has definitely helped me," the 38-year-old said. "It helps me train every day because it gives me the flexibility and the strength not only to play the game but to train as well.

Ryan Giggs rules out England's Euro 2012 hopes

Ryan Giggs has dismissed England’s chances of winning Euro 2012. The Manchester United winger said it would be impossible to overcome the twin setbacks of Fabio Capello’s departure and Wayne Rooney’s suspension from the opening two matches.

Ryan Giggs eyes 1000 games for United

Golden oldie Ryan Giggs has set himself a target of playing 1000 games for Manchester United.

The 38-year-old has chalked up a record 904 appearances for the club since making his debut 22 years ago.

Since then he has won 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, one Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup.

The Wales legend penned a new one-year extension to his Old Trafford deal last month.

Ryan Giggs: Derby will be decisive

Ryan Giggs expects the Premier League title race to be decided by the Manchester derby at the end of April and is continuing to live his dream of playing for Manchester United.

United opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table on Monday evening after a nervy 1-0 home success over Fulhammade it six successive wins.

The reigning champions have overhauled Manchester City in recent weeks, with their local rivals having stuttered away from home since the turn of the year.

    Ryan Giggs: Zanetti the toughest

Ryan Giggs has described Javier Zanetti as his 'most difficult opponent', but says he was never tempted to join the Inter Milan captain in Serie A.

The Manchester United veteran has recently passed 900 appearances for the Premier League champions and signed a new one-year contract last month.

He has spent over 20 years in the Red Devils' first team and has come up against numerous high-class full-backs at domestic, European and international level.

    Giggs hails crucial win

Ryan Giggs admits 1-0 wins like the one Manchester United picked up on Monday against Fulham could prove crucial.

United claimed all three points thanks to Wayne Rooney's first-half strike, which sent them clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the table.

And Giggs admits that United are happy to take 1-0 wins whenever the opportunity arises in the race for the title.

"You'd take 1-0s to the end of the season now," he told MUTV.

    Giggs relishing title hunt

Ryan Giggs is enjoying the title chase and feels 1-0 victories like the one secured against Fulham could prove crucial.

The midfielder has lifted the trophy 12 times after being involved in numerous run-ins and won't be losing any sleep over the manner of success on Monday night as the Cottagers ensured nobody at Old Trafford could relax.

Manchester City were unlucky to lose Ryan Giggs to Manchester United. Danny Welbeck too? That’s careless!

Waiting in the wings: Ryan Giggs with Danny Welbeck (far right) at 13

To lose one might be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness. Manchester City had Ryan Giggs in their youth team for two years but ended up losing him to Manchester United at 14 years-old.

Some 11 years later they let another one slip through their fingers. It was just before Christmas in 1998 and City’s youth coaches decided that the eight-year-old Danny Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck was not for them. By the New Year he was with United.

“They custard pied me!” Welbeck said of his City rejection.

Scholes tempted to follow Giggs' trail and sign new United deal

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is considering extending his comeback from retirement.

The veteran playmaker retired at the end of last season, but made an unlikely return in the 3-2 FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City on January 8.

Scholes, 37, has been in fine fettle since getting back to business, starting eight times in 13 appearances, and netting two goals.

Now he is tempted to sign a one-year contract extension, like his colleague Ryan Giggs did in February.

Bryan Robson: United's veterans will pip City in the title race

Bryan Robson reckons United’s old boys’ network will outrun City in the race for the title.

The Old Trafford and England legend is backing veterans Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand to clinch a record 20th league championship.

And Robson, who won two Premier League titles at United during a glorious playing career, believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s side could even be crowned champions at the Etihad Stadium on April 30.

Is number 20 waiting in the wings?

Sharpe and Giggs…Kanchelskis and Giggs… Beckham and… err Giggs, Ronaldo and.. you’ve guessed it, Giggs!

Even just considering the modern era, United’s most exciting sides have always had a wing pairing. It's like when people ask who's going to replace the manager - it's a waste of time trying to predict it. Ryan will go on for as long as he wants to, and the same goes for Paul. Golden oldies Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are still a smash hit

Like Lennon and McCartney, the hits keep coming for Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. The two masters of Old Trafford scored the goals in Manchester United's 2-1 win at Norwich City last Sunday and their genius will be thrust to the fore at Tottenham Hotspur.

In the Premier League match that Sir Alex Ferguson has marked as one to "survive", the United manager will trust the pair with 1,587 senior appearances between them to steer his title-chasing side in the cauldron of a Sunday afternoon at White Hart Lane.

Roy Keane: United’s wise old men know the score

If Tottenham are going to win today then they better have a couple of goals in them because Manchester United will definitely score.

Nobody doubts Spurs are a good side but history will show you that they don't get enough results against the big teams — and I can't see that changing this afternoon.

Their mindset is to attack and that's fine against most teams but you can be asking for trouble if you leave yourself open against the likes of United.

And it's only a week since Spurs conceded five against Arsenal.

Defoe: Rooney will benefit from Giggs & Scholes

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe says Wayne Rooney couldn't hope to have better mentors than Manchester United teammates Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

"Defoe feels Rooney only has to follow their example to guarantee a long future in the game. "

He said: “I’m sure he’s looking at players like Giggsy. He’s around him every day and I’m sure he’s thinking ‘I’ll do whatever he’s doing’. Because I would do that.

Ashley Young: I'll learn so much from Giggs and Scholes

Ashley Young has revealed the secrets of sharing a dressing room with veteran pair Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

‘Whenever players like that speak, you sit there and you listen,’ said the England winger.

‘They are two players who have had magnificent careers. You look up to players like that. I would love to emulate any one of their careers.’

Harry Redknapp hails Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has heaped praise upon veteran Manchester United duo Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Spurs come up against United this Sunday with Scholes and Giggs featuring as the only survivors from the last time Tottenham beat the Red Devils back in 2001.

Despite both men now being in their late 30s, however, Redknapp believes that they are still top players.

Cole lauds ‘phenomenal' Giggs' 900 appearances

Dubai: Manchester United legend Andy Cole has paid tribute to former teammate Ryan Giggs after the veteran Welshman racked up his 900th appearance for the club at the weekend.

Giggs, who has been playing for the Old Trafford outfit since 1991, fittingly crowned the incredible landmark with the winning goal as United edged past Norwich City to keep up the pressure on title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Ryan Giggs, Stanley Matthews and the art of growing old gracefully

Geoffrey Green died in the spring of 1990, at the age of 78, just a few months before Ryan Giggs celebrated his 17th birthday by signing professional forms with Manchester United. So the great football correspondent of the Times never saw a Welsh prodigy whose gifts he would certainly have adored and celebrated in rich prose that vibrated with enthusiasm. But he did have a Ryan Giggs of his own.

Paul Scholes pays tribute to Ryan Giggs

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United need to win all 12 of their remaining games if they are to secure the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City.

    Stewart Gardner: Fairytale of Norfolk

When you are making an arduous, never-ending Sunday-night trek from Norwich to Manchester, on a packed train devoid of a working toilet, there are very few things which can render the journey bearable. An injury-time winner from Ryan Giggs on his 900th United appearance is one of those things.

    Giggs hungry for more

Ryan Giggs admits he is enjoying his football more than ever after breaking through the 900-game mark for United.

The Welshman continues to rewrite the record books and the 38-year-old is relishing performing for at least another season at the highest level for his boyhood idols.

"To play 900 games for Manchester United is obviously something to be proud of," he told MUTV. "Especially growing up as a United fan.

    Giggs delighted with milestone

Ryan Giggs hailed his match-winning goal on his 900th appearance for Manchester United against Norwich as 'special'.

The Canaries were beaten 2-1 after the veteran winger's stoppage-time winner at Carrow Road.

Paul Scholes had given the visitors an early lead only for Grant Holt to restore parity with seven minutes remaining.

But after Giggs' late effort, the Welshman said the moment was very special for himself and his side.

Sir Alex: Win could be pivotal

Sir Alex Ferguson believes United's last-gasp victory at Norwich, courtesy of milestone man Ryan Giggs, could prove crucial in the title race.

The Reds looked set to drop two vital points after Paul Scholes' early opener was cancelled out by Grant Holt's 83rd-minute equaliser.

But Giggs, playing his 900th game for the club, popped up with the winner two minutes into injury-time to secure what could turn out to be a huge victory.

Paul Scholes reacts to late win

Paul Scholes says the champions realise three points could be essential from every match until the end of the season if United are to retain the title.

The midfielder was outstanding again in the dramatic 2-1 win at Norwich, scoring the opening goal, and explained to MUTV afterwards that the players realised a point was insufficient in the title chase when Grant Holt levelled with seven minutes to go.

    Ryan Giggs: Result epitomises spirit

Ryan Giggs admits the fans and Sir Alex must be frustrated with the overall performance at Norwich but the late matchwinner was obviously delighted to grab the three points in true United fashion.

Neville: Giggs and Scholes show the older players how to manage their careers

Something interesting has happened over the last 10 years in the Premier League. Players who once would have been discarded as expensive and too old have become important parts of title-winning squads.

In fact, the ideal Premier League squad these days would have about eight players under the age of 23, about 12 between 23 and 31, and four or five up to 38.

John Ruddy: I won't let you beat me at the near post again, Giggsy

John Ruddy will be glued to his near post if Ryan Giggs takes a free-kick out wide tomorrow.

For the Welshman made the keeper look like a Ruddy fool seven years ago when the Norwich star was having a trial at Manchester United.

A United fan as a kid, Ruddy, 25, was then at Cambridge and desperate to impress Sir Alex Ferguson.

When he featured for United’s reserves, he even played the last 35 minutes of the match despite badly injuring his right shoulder.

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United's past experience of title chases offers them the upper hand in this season's Premier League pursuit.

The Red Devils have secured 12 top-flight titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, taking their overall tally to a record-breaking 19.

Having been there and done it on some many previous occasions, United are confident that they can once again come out on top in the race to secure English football's most prestigious prize.

Ryan Giggs can be Manchester United manager one day says Dion Dublin

Ryan Giggs would be perfect take over as Manchester United manager one day, says former Red Devils striker Dion Dublin.

It has been claimed current Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson championed Ryan Giggs’ cause at a recent private function.

Having just signed a one-year contract extension and with no managerial experience, it would be a surprise if United’s hierarchy were thinking of Ryan Giggs as a potential direct successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Analysis: Is Ryan Giggs a realistic replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United?

Ryan Giggs has long been tipped to be a future Manchester United manager. Now, according to some reports, he’s been given Sir Alex Ferguson’s blessing to be the next one – ahead of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. Scholes: "Giggs can manage Manchester United"

Paul Scholes has backed Ryan Giggs to be a serious contender for the Manchester United managerial post when Sir Alex Ferguson slips into retirement.

The current occupant of the Old Trafford hot-seat has offered no indication that he is to step down any time soon, but there will become a day when he finally walks away.

Speculation regarding who could fill such sizeable shoes is already doing the rounds, with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola drawing plenty of support.

Sir Alex tips Ryan Giggs to succeed him as United boss

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Ryan Giggs could one day succeed him as Manchester United manager.

The United boss has confided to friends that he considers the record-breaking Welsh winger to have a big enough personality - and the right presence at the club - to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining success at Old Trafford.

Following Ferguson will be a daunting task for whoever is chosen, but after serving under the 70-year-old Scot for 21 years, few have a better understanding of how his manager runs the club than Giggs.

    Giggs and Berba out injured

Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov have missed out on the trip to Amsterdam to face Ajax due to injury.

Sir Alex revealed the news at a press conference in the Dutch capital ahead of Thursday's tie with Giggs having to wait to make his 900th appearance for the club. Patrice Evra has also remained in Manchester after being subjected to so much media attention in Saturday's win over Liverpool.

Ryan Giggs: 'No need for pre-match handshake'

Manchester United midfielder Giggs shook the hand of Liverpool forward Suarez before Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford, despite the Uruguayan snubbing Evra’s hand moments earlier.

Suarez’s lingering anger at being suspended for eight games for racially abusing Evra is understood to have influenced his decision not to shake hands, but the player’s subsequent apology has now been welcomed by United.

    Ryan Giggs Europa League dream

Ryan Giggs starts the hunt for some missing silverware tomorrow night.

And he insisted: I want a Europa League medal in my trophy cabinet.

The veteran Welshman is in line to make his 900th Manchester United appearance at Ajax.

There is a sense of anti-climax about the tournament around Old Trafford, as Alex Ferguson's men had previously got to three Champions League finals in four years.

Yet Giggs, 38, has urged his team-mates to give Europe's second competition their best shot as they enter the last 32.

    Giggs targets 1,000 appearances

Ryan Giggs is eyeing the 1,000 appearance mark after signing a new 12 months contract with Manchester United .

He is expected to feature in his 900th game for the Red Devils in the Europa League clash against Ajax on Thursday night.

Having extended his current deal at United by an additional 12 months, Giggs is looking to reach the 1,000 game mark in his 22rd year with the club.

“If I finish this season well and play a lot next season, I should do it, which would be great because not many have done that," he said.

    Ryan Giggs: I almost quit

On the eve of his 900th Manchester United appearance, Ryan Giggs has revealed that a meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson dissuaded him from retiring at the end of last season following a stuttered start to the 2010/11 campaign.

The veteran, who hopes to become the first and only Red to join the nine-ton club against Ajax on Thursday, says a hamstring injury coupled with his advancing years meant he considered calling it a day last term, but admits the lure of pulling on the red shirt maintained his desire to continue.

    Rio: "Ryan deserves his place"

Ryan Giggs is 38 years of age, in his 22nd top-flight season and on the brink of 900 appearances, yet he remains one of Manchester United’s best players.

It’s a remarkable fact that leaves Rio Ferdinand marvelling at what his team-mate has achieved over an incredible career, which was extended by another year on Friday.

Ferdinand insists there was no sentimentality in the decision to offer Giggs a new deal, nor in the fact that he’s still being picked by Sir Alex – not that any Reds needed convincing.

    Ryan Giggs 900 appearances

When Denis Irwin limped off the Old Trafford pitch after just 35 minutes against Everton on 2 March 1991, Alex Ferguson replaced him with a skinny 17-year-old.

Now, almost 21 years later, that talented teenager - namely Ryan Giggs - has won more trophies than any other player in the history of English football and is closing in on his 900th appearance for Manchester United.

As for Irwin, he can't believe Giggs is still terrorising top-flight defences, and recalls when the young Welshman first starting knocking on the first-team door.

Giggs has made 22 appearances for United in the current campaign, scoring three goals, and is set to make his 899th appearance for the club against Liverpool on Saturday.

    Ashley Young heeds advice

Ashley Young insists he still has plenty to learn from United legends Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, despite making almost 200 top-flight league appearances for three different clubs.

The 26-year-old England winger, who wore the colours of Watford and Aston Villa before joining the Reds last summer, is sure his game has benefitted from training and playing alongside the vintage pair, who continue to excel for United in spite of their advancing years.

    Chicharito hails Ryan Giggs

Javier Hernandez says he's "delighted" Ryan Giggs has signed a contract extension that will keep the Welshman at Old Trafford until the end of the 2012/13 season.

Chicharito grew up watching Giggs – indeed, Hernandez was just two years old when Ryan made his Reds debut – and now the Mexican goal-getter says he learns from the veteran every single day.

Giggs & Scholes lead the way

United boss Sir Alex feels Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are great examples to the younger players at the club.

Giggs has been rewarded with another contract extension while Scholes has shown no signs of rustiness after coming out of retirement to control the midfield again in his inimitable style.

The pair are still in tip-top condition and continue to excel this term, with Giggs crossing for Javier Hernandez's equaliser at Chelsea on Sunday. Indeed, the Welshman has the best minutes-to-assist ratio in the Barclays Premier League this season.

He’s made 22 appearances this season to take him to 898 overall, scoring three goals and adding vital nous and experience whether on the wing or in central midfield.

Last season’s title triumph was the Reds’ 19th and moved the club one ahead of Liverpool, the league’s dominant force when Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in 1986.

United have wiped out an 11-title deficit but, ahead of the Merseysiders’ visit to Old Trafford this weekend, Giggs knows the champions’ work isn’t done.
